We were infused with hope, moved by progress, and filled with pride in 2019. The way southwest Iowa agencies responded in the wake of the devastating spring floods throughout the region provided multiple opportunities to constructively channel our emergency support. As construction came to a close on the Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment facility and began on the Iowa West Sports Plex, we realized that these facilities in Council Bluffs/Pottawattamie County are not just hubs for activities like art camp or soccer practice, but also serve as places for belonging. Last but not least, as the confetti canons popped at our $500 million milestone celebration, we reveled in the transformational impact we have been able to have because of partnerships with nonprofits, government entities, and the greater community.

In 2019, we partnered with dozens of nonprofit organizations and governmental entities to award nearly 100 grants for a total of $20.6 million. This helped us to surpass the $500 million in funding milestone. Because our funding is matched with other sources, this translates to more than $1 BILLION infused into our community since the beginning of the Iowa West Foundation.

How We're Funded

The Iowa West Foundation receives its funding for grants from investment income and also from the Iowa West Racing Association. The association receives contracted fees from casino operators.

Why do we list the Community on our About Us page? Because the people who are community leaders,  elected officials, business entrepreneurs, students of all ages and Council Bluffs’ champions are the driving force behind our strategic plan.  From our listening sessions with those groups and others, we set the course for how we can continue to improve lives and strengthen communities by envisioning a place where families want to live and businesses want to locate, all because of the quality of life and standard of living.
